I don’t think anyone would be surprised to see Nintendo release more movies based on their games. The success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie, which has brought in over $700 million worldwide so far, is all the proof you need. While Nintendo isn’t ready to say what’s next for them in the world of cinema, it’s more clear than ever that other projects are coming.
Japanese publication Nikkei had the chance to chat with Shigeru Miyamoto about the success of the Mario movie, as well as Nintendo’s future in films. While Miyamoto didn’t share specifics, he did say, “Nintendo is like a talent agency. We have plenty of other entertainers.” To take things even further, Miyamoto went on to say, “There are many possible ways we could go, such as using characters that would be fit for movies, or very well-known characters.”
In other words, expect Nintendo to expand their movie output considerably in the future. There’s no doubt the Mario movie will get a sequel, but it seems that won’t be all for Nintendo in the world of movies. As Miyamoto says, there are all sorts of franchises they could work with for silver screen adaptations. The big question is, what one should they tackle next?
