Akorn Pharmaceuticals has laid off hundreds of its employees in Amityville.

The Illinois-based company announced it is filing for bankruptcy during a Zoom meeting with all of its employees.

All locations across the country will be shutting down, including its Amityville facility.

Alan Shepard, an employee at the company, told News 12 they did not receive a warning about the shutdown and were told to leave without severance pay or medical insurance.

“We get insurance until the end of the month, and we just basically feel like they violated our rights,” Shepard says. “And they just shut the place down with people working there for 30-plus years, put them out of work.”

The Illinois Department of Labor will be investigating Akorn’s handling of the facility closures and layoffs.
